The Royal We 05:47
My friends have come and gone Some gone 'round the bend And some gone forever And I can't get over it And what happened to us Is what happens to everyone Sooner or later And later is sooner than we think I wonder what they know Are they befuddled And are they as confused as me And a little bit frightened Do they get up in the night And pace their rooms Does their life have any value Or do they just Do they just disappear Where do we come from And what are we And where are we going We think we're living the life Things are getting better But slowly and surely We are being replaced That's how it always is Don't let it get you down Just hold on tight For as long as you can We all have a dream And then it fades And it turns into something Something dark and obscure We try to figure it out Why did things go kaflooie We know we're not blameless But the price is too steep

One day I mug this guy on the subway And I steal from him his iPhone When I get home I look to see what tracks that he has And there's a name I hadn't known So I play his songs and I kinda dig him Even though I don't know who he was I like his singing, I like his songs I just like what it is he does And I think hey, hey I'm your biggest fan Whatever you do You the man Hey, hey I'm your biggest fan You the man You the man I am trying to find this guy He is nowhere on the internet I wonder if this guy's a local Perhaps a guy I have met I ask around all to no avail Until one day I see a poster It was the name of this guy and he was playing a show Down by the old roller coaster I'm pretty excited Can't wait to see him I wonder what he looks like And what it's like to be him I'm pretty excited Can't wait a whole week I know when he hits the stage I'm gonna freak Well I get to the show and boy I'm pumped I'm about to see my man I have a few beers and the 'shrooms kick in He comes out and says his name is Dan Then it starts to dawn on me Even though I'm feeling pretty drugged That this guy Dan singing these songs Is the guy that I mugged And I say hey, hey I'm your biggest fan Whatever you do You the man Hey, hey I'm your biggest fan You the man You the man

Woebegone 03:36
Say hello then say goodbye It's all gone in the blink of an eye Today you're here and then you're not Best to hang on to what little you got Oh woebegone All the landmarks have changed Oh woebegone No nothing was exchanged A train pulls in and it's all aboard Better you know what you are heading toward The whistle blows and the wheels do grind Don't want to be the one who gets left behind I see your face everywhere I turn But it's an illusion you'd think I'd learn Now all I want is a bit of relief Just a little something to get me past my grief

Cooped up and snowbound With nowhere to go I tug on my memory for relief And a thousand odd feelings Stain my blanked-out skies Both joy and a little grief And I curse the cold And I curse these streets And I curse my fears And I curse my defeats The good and the bad The happy and the sad All the living and the dead It will stay with me For eternity My thoughts are a tornado In my head Wound up and torn down I hide in my room While the snowplows scrape and screech Nowhere to go And it's twenty below Once more I go unto the breach And I curse my hell And I curse my hands I curse my world And all it demands 'Round and 'round They spin 'round and 'round They grow in me like a weed 'Round and 'round They spin 'round and 'round But where do they ever lead And I curse my folly And I curse my disease I curse all the people Who do just as they please

Nobody's gonna tell us what to do Not no one, not no way 'Cause we're gonna do What we're gonna do Nobody's gonna hold us down Not no one, not no how 'Cause we deserve What we deserve We're movin' on up to Liberty Heights Where everybody's happy and nobody fights We're movin' on up to Liberty Heights We know our laws and we know our rights Nobody's gonna give us any jazz Not no one, not no way 'Cause we're gonna take What we're gonna take And nobody's gonna tell us that we're wrong Not no one, not no how Doing what's best And what's best is right Nobody's gonna throw us in the pokey Not no one, not no way We don't get ourselves down Down in that dirt Nobody's gonna tell us where to stick it Not no one, not no how It's all up It's all up from here

Happy Ending 06:29
The light turned green and I started to go A car plowed through from where I don't know It knocked me down flat on my back And then it drove on and then it all went black Next thing I knew I was flying so high My body down there, my soul in the sky I started to laugh, "Why the hell not" I felt light as air while they dug me a plot I went past the clouds above land and sea I started to figure out this was the end of me And I am on my way to a happy ending And I will be OK with my happy ending Then I saw a light was as bright as the sun And a voice called to me, "All your worries are done" I kept going up, left my body behind And all that I felt was a certain peace of mind The voice spoke again Said, "In me you can trust" But with those words for me it all went bust

Can we know the world around us When so much is kept from view We all got our special secrets So much we're never privy to It's one of life's puzzling mysteries All these private little histories Hidden things All these hidden things Hidden things Can you find them Hidden things What does blind them Imagine a life in a world of clarity One without the subterfuge You could make a choice with confidence The difference would be huge It would be like pulling back the blinds Letting light into a billion darkened minds I want to see what no one else has seen I want to see inside your head I want to see what no one else has seen Go where angels fear to tread Well it's easy to get lost these days No one says just what they mean Nothing is black and nothing is white It's always somewhere in-between I want for a world where stuff is sorted But I live in a world that's distorted

Better 05:09
Well a friend of mine he died last week After a long and terrible bout with cancer Well before he left I asked him how he it felt And he said, he said he had no answer C'mon and tell me, tell me true Is there nothing in the world we can do And it's gotta be better Gotta be getting better Gotta be getting better All the time Another friend of mine he's got ALS His reward for being a good drummer I asked him how he felt about his bad luck He said, yeah, I guess it's a bummer C'mon and tell me, tell me now Why can't we god speed the plough C'mon and hold my hand Hold it, and raise it high You are the only one To help me touch the sky C'mon and hold me close Clutch me to your breast Look in my eye And say it's a peaceful rest Another friend of mine got dementia And he don't remember my name I stop by to see him now and again Life to him now is one strange parlor game C'mon and tell me, say it if you dare What's going on in your head up there

Started out on 42nd Street Headed for that big ol' brown Hudson Crossed over New Jersey way Bounded southwestward to Princeton Made it down to Philadelphia Then west across to Ohio Took Route 30 through Illinois Wended our way to Iowa We're travelin' up and down and all around Through a big and small and midsize town On that transcontinental highway Well you and me and the kid makes three We're hap-hap-happy as can be On that transcontinental highway Moved on to Columbus, NE Gassed up that good ol' T-Bone Truck Stop Picked up a K.D. Lang CD With some sliders, some French fries and a soda pop Sped along through Granger, Wyoming Got a ticket from Erik Estrada He winked and sent us on our merry way As we went up to Sierra Nevada Look at all them crazy license plates From every state in our big ol' crazy nation It's all one giant shopping mall Thank God for civilization Climbed our way up a steep incline Thought we'd almost run out of gas Scooted along old U.S. Route 4-Oh 'Cross that fabled Donner Pass Stopped to get a big bag of pork rinds Then onward we flew through Sacramento Picked up a hippie in Berkeley Reached our end in San Francisco

Everyone is always looking for a hero A hero to set the world right And everyone is always searching for the one The one who'll shine down the light Here he comes He's a-ridin' through the darkness With a sound like a big old drum roll Here he comes Here comes Moses on a Pony And he's a-coming to save your wretched soul Everyone is always looking for a savior Just like it was prophesized And everyone is always seeking a saint Who will appear undisguised Everyone is always praying for salvation Insurance for the end of days And everyone is always casting out sinners To guard against their evil ways

Fatherland 05:27
We been wandering through this land Looking for our home sweet home We been cast out like so much trash Everywhere we roam We may be lowly, we may be fools We may be stubborn like a pack of mules We may be stupid, we may be nuts We may be dirty but boy have we got guts Down and down we go To the fatherland We been a-dreaming of another world A world in which we rule We live in mansions up on the hill And we go to the finest school We may be downtrodden, we may be lost We may live in tenements that look just like a holocaust We may wear rags, we may be in debt We may be down but we are not done just yet We been a-hoping for a better time When it's Christmas every day When all our dreams will come true And we shine like the milky way We may be broken, we may be hurt We may have our faces shoved down in the dirt We may paupers, we may have no clout But one day we will rise on up And show 'em all what we're all about

Continuum 06:18
So I am nothing and nothing is me A speck of dust just aching to be I clean up in the morning I rearrange the chairs I live out my days In meaningless affairs There is no beginning and there is no end There is only the arc of the continuum No there is no right and there is no wrong There is only the arc of the continuum So I am a peephole into a windowless room Where the sweat on the tiles is the only perfume On the desk is diary And next to it a vase the rose draws blood And it drips on the lace Went down the garden We watched a fish die My child she broke down and how she did cry We said a prayer and put it in the ground I told her one day The fish would come back around Ray died of cancer It was the end of an age Someone needs to show up and start a new page So I look to tomorrow and I hold out hope I'm only one knot on this long piece of rope

about

“There is a tide in the affairs of men

Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;

Omitted, all the voyage of their life

Is bound in shallows and in miseries.

On such a full sea are we now afloat;

And we must take the current when it serves,

Or lose our ventures.”
