Near Russ and Daughters on Houston
And he had a girlfriend named Nan
And she had a tattoo that
Pulled a quote from Borges that said

Time is a river which sweeps me along
But I am the river
It is a tiger which destroys me
But I am the tiger
It is a fire which consumes me
But I am the fire

Our boy was an artist who spent his days
Watching Nan pull threads out of the couch
And when he wasn’t looking
She often ate his granola and spit in his coffee
And he remembered that line from Borges

I am not sure that I exist, actually
I am all the writers that I have ever read
All the people that I have met
All the women that I have loved
All the cities I have visited

Our boy imagined his face
Devoured by a gray catbird
And his eyes fell back in his head
So he could not see Nan no more
And he recalled that line from Borges

You have awakened not out of sleep
But into a prior dream
And that dream lies within another
And so on, to infinity
Which is the number of grains of sand
The path that you are to take is endless
And you will die before you have truly awakened
